The second event of the Triple Crown takes place on Saturday 12th January as reigning champion Judd Trump attempts to defend his title with Shaun Murphy his first opponent. It is the 46th staging of the Masters tournament, with its inaugural year coming in 1975.

Though no ranking points are on offer as it is solely an invitational event of 16 players, the Masters is often one of the most entertaining tournaments in snooker, with the highest ranked players in the world taking part.

The Masters features games of best-of-11-frames in each round until the final, which is a best-of-19-frames. As such, the tournament will benefit those snooker players that prefer short, but intense games rather than a drawn-out competition.

Ding Junhui won the first event in the Triple Crown – the 2019 UK Championship – and is 12/1 to win the competition and even 6/1 just to get the final on William Hill.

Key Battle to Look Out For

Defending champion Judd Trump is 2/1 to win the tournament on Skybet and is 11/8 to reach the final. Therefore, those that love a punt may well look elsewhere.

Australian Neil Robertson is 9/2 to win, but if 20/1 rated Shaun Murphy can get past Trump in the first-round – which would be an incredible feat in itself – then there is no reason why the Harlow-born pro cannot add his second Masters title.

Also, look out for three-time Masters winner Mark Selby, who is 13/2 to win the competition for a fourth time. And, Selby plays 66/1 outsider Ali Carter in the first round and will avoid Trump until the final – if both make it.

With seven-time Masters champion Ronnie O’Sullivan out of the reckoning, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will be triumphant. Though, if Trump is on form then it will be difficult to see anyone getting past him. But, if, akin to his defeat in the 2019 UK Championship to Nigel Bond, Trump gets frustrated with a slow-tempo game, then the tournament is wide open.
