With the Cheltenham Festival fast approaching, savvy punters are already on the lookout for some ante-post value, and in this week’s ‘Road to the Cheltenham Festival’, we’ve got our first ante-post Odds Pick lined up.
So read on, and get your ‘Jaws’ round our Stayers’ Hurdle fancy.
Legendary trainer Willie Mullins tasted Stayers’ Hurdle success in 2017 and 2018 with Nichols Canyon and Penhill, and 2021 could see him bag the race once more with Great White Shark.
Last seen landing the Cesarewitch at Newmarket in October, Great White Shark is set to return this Thursday in the Grade 2 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park.
Before that Newmarket win, Great White Shark had won the Guinness Hurdle at Galway in July, proving her liking for both the flat and hurdles.
The horse behind her in 3rd at Galway was Flooring Porter, who has since won at Navan and also lifted the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown.
With that red-hot form, Great White Shark looks a horse to follow and she’s gone under the radar so far for Cheltenham success.
Yes, she’ll need to improve, but she’s been lightly campaigned over the last 18 months and she’ll also receive a valuable weight allowance if lining up in the Stayers’.
She also has Cheltenham experience, running 3rd in the Martin Pipe last year and she’s adaptable when it comes to trip and ground.
A strong performance at Gowran this week will see her price for the Festival slashed and we think now is the time to back her at some cracking odds.
