It’s major season on the PGA Tour, but before we get to the USPGA in two week’s time, Quail Hollow hosts the latest Wells Fargo Championship.
Even in the presence of Bryson, JT, Rahm and Schauffele, one of the biggest questions on golf fans’ lips is whether Rory McIlroy can rediscover his form at a course he adores.
And if he can, what a four days we could be in for in North Carolina!
Our Top Odds Pick – Rory McIlroy E/W (1/5 of the odds, first eight places) – 18/1 at Betfred
Tipping Rory McIlroy has been about as profitable as chucking your money down the waste disposal unit in recent months.
However, we’re not going to let a little thing like three missed cuts in his last six events bother us, because there’s plenty of reasons to expect a Rory renaissance in North Carolina!
Having not competed since the Masters, McIlroy has had almost a month to work with his new coach Pete Cowen, and it’s fair to expect an improvement.
He is also returning to one of his favourite courses, where he claimed his first PGA Tour title in 2010, won a second Wells Fargo crown in 2015 and has seven top-10s in nine appearances in the tournament.
Since 2010, McIlroy’s scoring average here is an unrivalled 69.5, and he said in 2019 that “I feel like I don’t even have to play that good and I can still get it round.”
He has a lot to find on recent form, but with over 3/1 for him to finish in the top eight, we can’t resist an each way dabble on Rory.
And speaking of each way dabbles, at 80/1, we reckon Joel Dahmen is a cracking bet.
Dahmen secured his first tour victory in March, at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
And just like McIlroy, Dahmen will have fond memories of Quail Hollow, coming second in 2019’s Well Fargo Championship and T16 on debut in the same tournament in 2018.
