Saturday saw Goshen roar into Champion Hurdle contention after a sizzling display in winning the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton.
Famous for his fall at the last in last year’s Triumph Hurdle with the race in the bag, he bounced back from a disappointing run in the International Hurdle to announce his return to form.
Travelling well throughout, he ran out a comfortable 22-length winner on Saturday, with Song For Someone a distant 2nd.
Goshen’s odds for Champion Hurdle glory were immediately cut from 20/1 into 9/2, leaving him 3rd favourite behind Honeysuckle and Epatante.
Trainer Gary Moore was full of praise for his horse after the race and confirmed that the next stop will be the Cheltenham Festival, “I was just hoping he would do what he has done today. It has to be the Champion Hurdle next. It has always been the target since last year. We’re hoping we can go there with every chance.”
Although an impressive winner on Saturday, Goshen was receiving 6lb in the weights from Song For Someone who did run below his best.
A crack at the Champion Hurdle is a different task for Goshen though – having to give 7lb in weight to the mares Honeysuckle and Epatante.
It’s a big ask – and one he may not be up to – but his return to form makes the Champion Hurdle an even more intriguing battle on day one of the Cheltenham Festival.
