We’re approaching the final stretch in the ‘most exciting league in the world’ as the sprint finish begins for a shot at promotion to the Premier League Promised Land.
As is normal in the Championship, there are plenty of ifs buts and maybes that will need ironing out over the next couple of months, but excitement will no doubt be at a premium.
So, how has the start of 2021 impacted the promotion market in the Championship?
Let’s take a look at the movers and shakers in this Championship Odds Movers special…
|Championship Promotion 2021|
Norwich City – 1/12 into 1/40
The Canaries are flying high without a care in the world.
Daniel Farke has delivered seven Championship wins on the spin and their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking looks imminent.
They’re ten points clear at the top of the tree and it looks highly improbable that they’ll drop out of the top two.
So get the yellow and green bunting ready!
“Where are youuuuuuu?!”
We’re still here, Delia.
Brentford – 1/2 out to 4/7
The Bees looked a pretty safe bet for a promotion place until three losses on the trot in February stifled their charge.
Thomas Frank has still had a fantastic season in west London following the departures of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, and with superstar striker Ivan Toney already bagging 25, they’ve certainly got the firepower to kick on once again.
They currently sit in fourth, but are the league’s top scorers by a healthy distance.
Watford – Evs into 8/11
The Hornets have turned on the style since mid-February, winning six of their last seven and emerging as one of the favourites to join Norwich in the automatic spots.
They’ve become a side of grafters that just about do enough.
Six of their last eight wins have come by a solitary goal, and their experience is beginning to show at a crucial time.
Barnsley – 8/1 into 5/1
Where did Barnsley come from?
We’ve been told all season that the Tykes are an expansive, football-friendly, exciting team to watch under Valerien Ismael but I’m not sure we expected them to be knocking on the promotion door.
They’ve come in from 8/1 to 5/1 in the last month after piecing together seven league wins on the trot.
Beware of the form team when it comes down to the playoffs…
Cardiff City – 8/1 out to 11/1
Life has been pretty sweet for the Bluebirds since Mick McCarthy took the reins earlier this year.
Cardiff City have now gone 11 without defeat in the Championship and are up to eighth in the standings.
It’s a little surprising to see their price drift as far, but there is a sense that the Welsh side are currently over-performing, and their ‘new manager bounce’ will soon subside.
They are only three points off a playoff spot as it stands, so 11/1 is a fantastic outside punt if you’re a member of the Mick McCarthy church.
