With just over two weeks until the Cheltenham Festival, we’re back with another ante-post pick, and this time it’s for the big one – the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
It’s one of the most prestigious races in horse racing and Al Boum Photo will be back to defend his Gold Cup crown having bagged victory in the race the last two seasons.
Read on to see our thoughts on the race and who we’re siding with in the Gold Cup.
Trained by Willie Mullins, Al Boum Photo is looking to book his place as a Cheltenham legend this month as he hunts down a third consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cup.
He’ll arrive at the Festival on the back of success in the Savills Chase at Tramore, the same route he’s taken the last two seasons.
Mullins gave an update on his Cheltenham preparation last week, saying, “He’s in great shape. He worked well last week and he’s a big bit of work coming up this week.”
He’s the current bookie’s favourite for the Gold Cup, heading the betting from Champ and A Plus Tard, in what should be an exciting lineup.
Champ was impressive making his seasonal reappearance at Newbury over an inadequate two-mile trip, while A Plus Tard hasn’t been seen since winning the Savills Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas.
They both have winning form at the Festival though – Champ winning the RSA Chase last year and A Plus Tard winning the Close Brothers Novices’ Chase at the 2019 Festival.
This looks set to be the toughest Gold Cup yet for Al Boum Photo but at only eight-years-old, he’s still open to improvement and looks the one they all have to beat.
You write-off a two-times Gold Cup winner at your peril and it looks like Al Boum Photo will have conditions to suit once more as he hunts down history.
So we’re happy to side with him this year and hopefully, we’ll be cheering him home come the Friday of the Festival.
